1.2 Introduction of the Problem



From 2nd of January, 2012 I was teaching and engaging with the students’ works. With in these short period when I work with students of grade 7B class of school, I noticed that some students refused the mathematics period. At the beginnings, some students always tried to disturb my lesson. Not only when I came to the class they made big noises like these. Some students directly told “I can not teacher, We can’t maths, mathematics is difficult, We got low marks for mathematics”. As well as I noticed some students didn’t participate actively with the lesson. They tried to be a side. They did other thing. But within my ICT period they were not show like these behavior. As a result of that , It is difficult for them learning mathematics. Because of this I am also unable to create a good learning teaching environment in the class room. I couldn’t achieve the objectives of the taught lessons. I felt that only few students got an idea and understood the lessons that I taught.

                                                During this period I got the opportunity to correct their mathematics paper of the first term test and there were very low marks for the particular group of student which I mention above. While engaging with the curriculum these student show very low performance and need my special attention and help to  them. In every day When I was going to the class room always I had to go to those student and repeat every things that I taught to the class. So this was a problem and also a special disadvantage for the other student in the class room.
                       
                                    I checked their books. Those students hadn’t write note in their writing books. They hadn’t solved the problems I have given. Their handwriting also didn’t clear. After that day I paid my special attention to wards those students. Then I could identify that those students haven’t knowledge regarding the basic mathematical operations.


                                    I discuss with the other mathematics teachers. Then  they have faced such a problems and they told that this problems will be arise a result of following problems.

Ø  Teacher use only lecture method for teaching
Ø  Teacher don’t use simple method for teaching
Ø  Mathematics is a easy subject but teaching is going on traditional way.
Ø  Provide less motivation
Ø  Less attention for student
Ø  Not use day today experiences for learning teaching process

                                                As a teacher trainee I had to maintain a reflective journal to record experiences in my learning teaching process. In this journal I had mention about above problem in few places. Then I observed that there were some problems. It was some students were always disturb my lesson and they make noises when I came to the class. Also some students were didn’t give answers for questions, they didn’t do home work as well as they didn’t engage the lesson actively. They show these behavior on my mathematics period. I had to waste time on behalf of these students. Therefore I couldn’t do the lessons on time and successfully. So I selected developing basic mathematical knowledge those who don’t like and weak for mathematics.

                                    After identify that problem by observing reflective journal I decided to use test, observation, discussion methods for clarify the that problem and identify the target group.

                                    In observation method I observed students activity in my lesson at Grade 7 B. I tried to observe students following criteria.

Ø  Participating of class room activity.
Ø  Doing home work.
Ø  Giving answer of questions.
Ø  Working speed of the students

                                    Through this Action Research, I have noticed some important points. Most of students did not engage in class room activities till I motivate them. So I should pay more attention towards those types of students rather than quick learners. It is better if those students are mixed up with the active students at least in group work.

                                    And there were some slow working students. Even they have the ability to do the works they take some time to finish it. So it is the teacher’s duty to give more time to them, while giving extra work for the bright students. But some time slow workers copy from bright students books.

                                    I could confirm through this observation the selected students who A,B,C,D,E were not in satisfactory level in education and their participation was minimum for learning teaching process as well as homework. The group of those students didn’t need to participated for the group activities.




                        The discussion is important method that I followed to gather information, about the selected students. I tried to find the reasons for this situation in discussion and also I gave them bio data sheet (Annex 01). I could get more information about my target group. I extract following details.
Student A
He lives near to the school. There are six members in his family. His father works at tea factory. His parents are not educated. His elder brother is not at home. He is with their grandparents. He said he has not any one to help him to do home work. He has a less eager for learning and attending school.  

Student B
She lives at Walawkade. There are five members in her family with her. Her father has a boutique. Mother does not work. She said some time her sisters checked her books and help her to doing home work. She is some what good for other subjects.

Student C
She lives in Walawkade. There are six members in her family. Her father is a labour. Mother does not work. Her one brother is a monk. Her family also has a poor back ground.

Student D
He also live in Walawkade. There are seven members in his family. His father is a .He has three brothers and one sister. Sister works at garment. He also said his books is nit checking any one.
Student E
He live near the school. His family has six members. His father works in tea garden. Mother also plucking tea. He has elder sister in grade 10 at same school. He said she help him to do home work. He is some what good for maths than others in my action research.
                                    According subject teachers these students were weak in their subject and they hadn’t basic knowledge regarding basic mathematical operations such as addition and subtraction. That students’ participation for the lesson was minimum. But previous mathematics teachers hadn’t got any action to solve this problem. Then I confirmed that I should intervene to this problem.

                        I used the records of the first term test marks. Through this test mark I identified the weak students for the mathematics subject. After check the test marks I confirm that above 5 students need the help of the teachers to develop.
 


According to these I used observation, Test, discussion for identify the my target group. After identify the problem I started my intervention step. I used various learning teaching methods, group activities, practicals. Through these steps I could motivate  them for subtracting numbers. Then they engaged actively with learning. Finally I hope to give test and held observation. Then I could evaluate the progress of students. After doing all these, I hope to develop one of basic mathematical knowledge is subtracting numbers among students.                
                                    I collected the information regarding the students’ knowledge about the basic mathematical operations such as subtraction.  Then I identified that few of the students need help to improve their level. Considering the above methods I came to the following conclusion.  
                     It is the teacher’s duty to motivate the student and let them see the importance of learning mathematics.  In subtract, the teacher should not let the students feel bored during lessons. We have to indicate them that learning subtraction is fun and let them realize that when we learn more concepts it will be easy to handle the subject Mathematics.
